5 out of 5 stars One of the craftiest books I have ever read, great suspense!   April 25, 2004

Ditto ...
Exceptional story line. This page turning book as created a brand new Stephen Hunter fan. I plan on reading his other books as well. Upon finishing the book, my inital and numb response was (to paraphase), "totally freaking awesome."

Mr. Hunter, I was looking for something to read and looked through your books. They didn't have your latest novel so I bought Point of Impact, even though I had listened to it on audiotape a few years ago. When I opened the book to the dedication page it brought me to tears. I couldn't believe you had dedicated the book to my cousin John Burke. Thank you. The words in your acknowledgment are gracious and mean so much coming from such an accomplished writer.

I've often wondered how John would have ever come back to the "world" after being a sniper in Vietnam. I imagine it would be difficult, the way you portray it in your books, especially here. And that realism is one reason I would recommend this book.

The other is that it is just a really great book to read.

I read several bad books before this one and I must say that I'm happy I did. They helped me truly appreciate the well written action, twists and suspense of this story. In this book Bob the Nailer is better at getting out of hopeless situations than James Bond, but without all the techtoys.

At least 3 times I thought he was 'done' but I knew because of the number of pages left that more was to come and I had to read for another 5, err...10, yikes...30, oh man...60 minutes - before forcing myself to put down the book and go to bed.

Point of Impact has lots of suspense, intrigue, and action, and is entertaining enough that the reader doesn't get hung up on the little "what ifs" that can easily spoil an action hero thriller like this. It is a highly enjoyable easy read.

5 out of 5 stars It doesn't get any better   October 26, 2003
Stephen Hunter's best novel of all time. You absolutely have to read this book. My wife, mother, and grandmoths also read the book and love it too, weird since it's a book about guns.

Too bad Stephen Hunter's books peaked here, he hasn't written a good one to this level since. They're all just wanna be novels.

Buy it, you will love it no matter what your tastes.

4 out of 5 stars Bob swaggers   September 10, 2003
For someone who doesn't have a background on rifles/guns, I found this book an interesting read. The variations & functions were concisely described without losing the reader into the technical & miniscule details. But this was just icing to the cake. The real serving was Bob the Nailer...his strength, his vulnerability, his unwavering faith to justice & the institution that embodies it. He is no cut-out hero but a 3-D character very much alive --- living & hurting --- dangerous but likeable.
