Now I Hate the Water..But adore this book! August 14, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Mr. Monahan is a charming master of inner stories.
Once you pick up the book and start reading this book, you realize, you better not have plans for the day. With a driving force of mad raw passion, each page you turn digs you deeper into a mysterious and corrupt world.
Dark, riviting and a must read. This is an awesome novel that deserves a look. Be sure to check it out, hopefully we get the sequel soon!
Fun Scuba Read! August 6, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought this book after reading the other reviews because it looked to have some realistic scuba action. Mr. Monahan did not disappoint me. Most of the dive info was right on. I could be real picky on a few things that only someone who has been involved in any type of tech diving would notice but I'll allow some literary license in the interest of a good story, which this definitely was. Some parts of the writing style and dialogue did show a little inexperience but I'm confident his next book will be a little smoother. All in all, worth buying and reading if you like a good mystery mixed in with your scuba diving adventure novel.
EXCITING PLOT AND ADVENTURE July 23, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Mike Monahan wrote a wonderful history of the Bikini Atoll, followed by high adventure, and an fascinating conflict bewteen the Russian Mob and the Japanese Yakuza. Lots of intrigue, diving, conflicts with local cultures, and interesting characters. I liked it and would recommend it to others. Perfect book for a follow-up, serial story line or the creation of another mutated creature...Good job, Mike.

Mike Monahan does a great job of portraying the story with enough action for a action packed movie. Hollywood watch out, the next big hit is on your hands!
Makes Jaws look like a sardine! July 18, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Barracuda is one wild ride! It has it all - Cop on vacation, Russian Mafia, Japanese Yakuza, money laundering, murder, mayhem, excitement! Oh, did I mention a HUGE barracuda spawned from the radiated waters of the Bikini Atoll? Oh yeah! Mike O'Shaunghnessy is a seasoned cop injured in the line of duty and on medical leave. He is sent on a recuperative vacation to the Bikini Atoll at a fantastic resort to do some R&R and scuba dive, which is his passion. But it turns out this is no vacation...strange things are happening in the water... Micko falls in the middle of more intrigue than he has had as a NYPD cop! He is an expert diver as well as having a cop instinct - even on vacation, Micko still has his cop radar on! And boy, does he use it! There is a lot of tension with It - the giant bad boy barracuda - and it looks like he'll be BFITO - big fish in the ocean forever! He eats everything in sight (including divers) and has a survival instinct that is uncanny. The action builds to an amazingly wild pitch as resolutions unfold. Nonstop. There are some hilarious scenes with Micko - especially with the Russian baddie Tanya - can't tell you, but it's worth 'the price of admission' just to read that - This book would be a super movie - Although obviously compared to Jaws, it is a totally different take on the battle of man and beast. Fun, action, espionage, romance, tension, violence, sex...What more do you want out of a great read? You'll love this book and be waiting for the next entry from former real life cop and expert diver Mike Monahan. Realistic diving information and the beauty of the sea paired with the terror of a monster...WOW! The new edition of Barracuda will be available in August. Worth the wait!
