Product Description
Aromatic oils have been used for thousands of years not only for their fragrance but for culinary, therapeutic, ritual, and spiritual purposes. More than a fashionable trend, aromatherapy is coming into its own as a body of knowledge and practice with specific applications that have a solid scientific base. Drawing on research and clinical studies, Peter and Kate Damian look at many applications from treating viral infections with garlic or black pepper oil to using rose oil to relax patients undergoing chemotherapy; from aromatic massage to the "environmental fragrancing" of subways and supermarkets.

Explores:

? How scent interacts with emotion, memory, mental acuity, and sleep

? Why specific scents are so effective in therapeutic and ritual settings

? Antiseptic and antimicrobial properties of essential oils
How men and women differ in their responses to odors

? Provides a thorough exposition of the ancient practice of aromatics in China, India, Persia, and Egypt

? Details our modern scientific understanding of the physiology and psychology of scent.

? Includes annotated profiles for forty-four essential oils and specific instructions for creating essential oil blends.

3 out of 5 stars Aromatherapy vs. Perfumery   May 16, 2008

One of my biggest pet peaves is when I start reading a book and find out that the book has more of an agenda than it is informative. This book should be called "Aromatherapy vs. Perfumery" or "How industries are using and testing synthetic fragrances with the intent of behavioral control." I already know about all that. I was more interested "using [true] essential oils for physical and emotional well-being," as the cover of the book states.

I most sincerely recommend this work to anyone interested in learning more about the magic of Aromas! Not only do the co-athors Peter and Kate Damian discuss the various attributes of many scents, they also tread deep into the inner workings of the human olfactory system. The research they have gathered is worthy of any major medical journal in both content and depth. I personally am involved in various research in the field of the effects of aromas on the human condition and found their book insightful and quite original.

The writting style is simple to follow and filled with those wonderful little phrases that we can carry with us to any social function. I myself have been quoting my favorites parts on quite a regular basis!

Sincerely, if you are interested in Aromatherapy, Incense, Perfume, or even just curious as to how scents have such a powerful response in us as human beings, then I whole heartedly suggest you read this text!

Keep well and remember to stop and SMELL the roses!
